1X Technologies

Senior Motor Control Engineer

$180K–$230K

San Carlos, CA · On-site · Senior · Full-time · Posted Oct 21, 2026

Experience
3+ years of industry experience designing and tuning motor control on real hardware; level set by depth and scope of ownership.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls, Mechatronics, Robotics or a related field.

About the job

Design, simulate, tune, and validate motor control for 1X’s permanent magnet synchronous motors, from controller models through dynamometer testing and integration on the NEO robot.

What you'll do

  • Develop and validate field-oriented motor control, torque and impedance modes, and motor parameter identification and sensor calibration procedures.
  • Characterize motor and control performance on dynamometers and robots; use results to improve control strategies and motor or drive revisions.
  • Define fault detection, reactions, limits, and safe torque-off behavior, and work with electrical and firmware engineers to productionize controls.

What they ask for

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls, Mechatronics, Robotics or a related field.
  • Shipped motor control: field-oriented control with cascaded current, velocity and position loops for PMSM or BLDC motors, running on hardware that reached production, a fielded fleet or a formal validation program.
  • Strong command of PMSM modelling in the dq frame, space-vector PWM, inverter non-idealities and voltage limits; hands-on parameter identification, position sensor calibration, and dynamometer experience.
  • Controller modelling and simulation in MATLAB/Simulink or Python; ability to read embedded C/C++ well enough to trace control behavior back to the code.

Nice to have

  • Torque and impedance control for robotic joints, field weakening and MTPA, FEA-derived motor models, or torque ripple and acoustic noise reduction.
  • Embedded firmware development, EtherCAT or CAN FD, real-time operating systems, functional safety, sensorless control, or MS/PhD research in motor drives or control.
