About the job
Leads hands-on engineering projects that expand and improve Block’s card-acquiring systems across Square, Cash App, and Afterpay.
What you'll do
- Lead one or two complex acquiring projects from technical design through production rollout, including network and acquirer connections or network mandates.
- Build and operate payment systems and tooling; analyze payment messages and make data-backed decisions on routing, retries, reliability, and processing costs.
- Establish reusable standards and frameworks, mentor engineers, and share operational responsibility for critical systems, including on-call and incident response.
What they ask for
- Deep card-payment integration experience at the message level, such as ISO 8583 or an acquirer’s host format—not only payment-provider APIs.
- Hands-on experience building and operating reliable financial or payment systems at scale, and leading technically complex projects from design through delivery.
- Experience creating technical frameworks, standards, tooling, architecture, or practices adopted by other engineers or teams.
- Daily experience building with AI coding agents; willingness to participate in an on-call rotation.
Nice to have
- Acquiring or merchant-side experience; direct network connection experience is a strong plus.
- ISO 20022 experience.
