About the job

Conduct laboratory and data-driven research to develop, evaluate, and validate automotive aftertreatment catalysts, using AI/ML to guide catalyst design and experiments.

What you'll do

  • Design and conduct catalyst evaluation studies, interpret characterization and reactor data, and develop product-relevant recommendations.
  • Build experimental datasets and apply AI/ML methods to identify catalyst-performance relationships, prioritize designs, and plan experiments.
  • Collaborate with research and engineering teams to validate catalyst concepts and contribute to technical reports, presentations, and publications.

What they ask for

  • Pursuing or completing a PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Must be graduating between August 2026 and June 2027; able to work fulltime, 40 hours per week.
  • Research experience in heterogeneous catalysis, reaction engineering, materials chemistry, surface science, or a related area; experience designing and conducting laboratory experiments.
  • Working knowledge of catalyst characterization and foundational scientific programming and data analysis; ability to learn and apply AI/ML methods.

Nice to have

  • Research experience in three-way catalysts, automotive emissions control, catalyst aging, durability, or related areas.
  • Experience or coursework in machine learning, design of experiments, Bayesian optimization, modeling, or scientific informatics.

Tools

FTIR-DRIFTS, BET surface area analysis, transmission electron microscopy, Python, MATLAB, R

AI focus

Apply AI/ML to catalyst design and experimental planning, including feature engineering, regression, classification, clustering, Bayesian optimization, active learning, and uncertainty quantification; validate model-generated hypotheses experimentally.
