Santa Clara, California, United States · On-site · Internship · Posted Sep 9, 2026

Education
Currently enrolled in a PhD program (preferred) or MS program in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or a related field.

About the job

Build, implement, and validate a bench-scale hybrid energy storage system and its controllers for managing data-center power swings, using hardware measurements to refine models and designs.

What you'll do

  • Build, commission, and safely operate a bench-scale hybrid energy storage test system; implement and compare controllers on real-time hardware.
  • Design transient validation tests, measure system behavior, and compare results with simulations to identify and update model or design gaps.
  • Document and communicate findings through technical reports, presentations, and potential publications or patents.

What they ask for

  • Currently enrolled in a PhD program (preferred) or MS program in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or a related field.
  • Fundamentals in power systems and power electronics, including DC/DC converter topologies and control, DC bus dynamics, and protection.
  • Experience with battery and supercapacitor storage, converter or energy-storage control, and safe testing practices.
  • Hands-on experience building and debugging kilowatt-scale power hardware; proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink and Python, with ability to move designs to real-time targets.

Nice to have

  • Experience with real-time platforms such as Typhoon HIL, dSPACE, OPAL-RT, Speedgoat, or equivalent.
  • Experience with hybrid storage or microgrid management, hardware-in-the-loop validation, embedded C, or relevant publications/prototypes.

Pay
