Thermal Design Engineer
Palo Alto · On-site · Full-time · Posted May 18, 2026
- Experience
- 5+ years, or equivalent "hard tech" projects.
About the job
Owns thermal architecture, analysis, testing, and production-ready cooling solutions for industrial robots, including actuators, end effectors, and onboard compute.
What you'll do
- Design thermal architectures and cooling solutions across robot subsystems from concept through volume production.
- Build analytical, CFD, and FEA thermal models and validate them through hardware testing and environmental stress tests.
- Define thermal limits and protection logic with electrical, firmware, and controls teams; contribute to scalable manufacturing and supplier selection.
What they ask for
- 5+ years of experience, or equivalent "hard tech" projects, designing and validating thermal solutions for complex electromechanical systems.
- Strong fundamentals in heat transfer and working knowledge of two-phase cooling and heat-pipe or vapor-chamber design.
- Hands-on experience with CFD tools and thermal FEA, plus testing and debugging thermal performance on real hardware.
- Experience solving thermal problems in at least one of high-torque-density motors or actuators, dense power electronics, or compute; proficiency in SolidWorks, Catia, or similar CAD tools.
Nice to have
- Experience in robotics, prosthetics, EV powertrains, drones, or other dense electromechanical systems.
- Familiarity with motor or actuator thermal modeling; liquid or hybrid cooling; or a PhD or research experience in thermal sciences.
Tools
Ansys Icepak, Flotherm, SolidWorks Flow Simulation, SolidWorks, Catia, CFD, FEA
